Explore Mexican Paradise!

August 14, 2008 - 12:06 am 1 Comment

Anyone can easily fall in love with Mexico. The beautiful shores, soothing climate, vibrant culture, fascinating history, religious tradition, and warm locals all create an indescribably mystifying atmosphere. Any state or city you choose to explore in this country will definitely give a unique experience that no other place in the world can duplicate.

Puerto Vallarta in the Mexican state of Jalisco is truly a paradise city. Though the beachfront has a stretch of hotels and resorts, this city has managed to preserve much of its natural beauty that is open to any willing traveler. The soft shores are not the only source of pride for these Mexicans; the jungles, rivers and wildlife are very inviting as well. Aside from the natural wonders, Puerto Vallarta has an interesting culture reflected in the city’s quaint architecture and historic landmarks.

Acapulco has to be the first Mexican paradise to get worldwide popularity. Like Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco has an urban atmosphere created by improved infrastructure that merges with the magnificence of nature. After unwinding on the beach in the morning, visitors have plenty of nightclubs to choose from where they can dance to the DJ while enjoying the open bar. But the real must-see in this paradise is the feat of the La Quebrada divers. From a cliff 130 ft high, a group of divers pray then take their daring jump off the edge. This popular attraction since the 1934 reveals Mexican religious tradition and strong bond with nature.

From the state of Quintana Roo comes an idyllic Mexican island. If you’re idea of a great beach is one where you can quietly commune with nature, then this Cozumel is a perfect pick. The shores are simply glorious. With the dreamy white sand and sparkling water, you are bound to forget the hassles of routine back home. The sea floor is also a favorite for divers and underwater photographers. Cozumel has one of the most colorful reefs and fishes. And like most parts of Mexico, Cozumel is not just about the beaches but also prides itself with a fascinating past. So aside from swimming, you can head to the heart of the island to see ruins of the Mayan civilization.

The coastal city which challenged the popularity of Acapulco is Cancun. Also from Quintana Roo, Cancun is one of the most sought for vacation spots around the globe. Cancun is perfect for everyone’s desires. It is highly urbanized which makes it a favorite of the Spring Breaker population. But this does not mean that Cancun is all about beach partying. Parts of Cancun can give the most tranquil beach getaway. Also, Cancun is not just about the beaches. There are the famous Cenotes or underwater caves which give a breathtaking view. Downtown Cancun is also very rich in culture. You will surely have fun mingling with the locals and getting a taste of their vibrant culture. You can also even watch a genuine bullfight! But one thing you must not miss when visiting this amazing coastal city is the Chichen Itza. This Mayan Ruin, which is now part of the world’s New 7 Wonders, is in the Mexican state of Yucatan which is near Quintana Roo. So if you’re in Cancun, might as well take a ride to Yucatan. I promise the experience is worth it.

Travel to the Birthplace of Your Music

August 7, 2008 - 11:50 pm No Comments

One great cultural asset of any foreign society is their music. When traveling, you should never miss a chance to delve into another’s local music. Here are a few places that have given the world great pleasures with their innovation in music.

Chicago Blues. This melancholic genre has its roots in African native music. From oral tradition, African-American slaves turned their indigenous music into blues. The genre became popular around America until it evolved into various styles. Chicago Blues is particularly characterized by amplified electric and bass guitars, with saxophones and harmonica played in front of microphones. Blues evolved into a louder and more dynamic genre in this city. So the next time you visit Chicago, don’t forget to sit in a bar and listen to a local blues band.

Jamaican Reggae. It’s probably the soothing Caribbean atmosphere of Jamaica that inspired the world’s favorite peace lover to create reggae. Bob Marley, with a strong hold on Rastafarian philosophy, wrote the steadiest lyrics about redemption, peace and love to accompany the soothing melodies of reggae. Aside from the glorious beaches, the world thanks Jamaica for introducing Reggae.

English Punk. In the 70’s America and the UK both witnessed the birth of punk music. New York had its first taste of anti-establishment punk rock from the Ramones. In London, audiences were also witnessing not only a musical but also a social revolution with the music of the Clash and the Sex Pistols. With distaste of authority and the mainstream, punk bands upheld countercultural ideologies of rebellion and DIY (do-it-yourself). London, with a reputation for elegance and discipline, also has a rebellious and untamed side!

World Music of the Pacific. The term world music is actually so broad it’s almost only used to separate Western pop music from the non-Western. Basically, World music is identified as the fusion of traditional musical elements and the modern. This is usually found in the Pacific where modern musicians use native instruments together with modern guitars and drums. Hawaii, for example, uses a lot of their traditional Ukulele with amplifiers and electric guitars.

Mexican fusion. This can also be classified as World Music. The native drumming of Latin America is accompanied by some sexy guitar riffs and groovy bass lines producing a musical fusion with elements of blues, jazz and salsa. No other band perfected this craft than Santana, a group led by the extremely talented Mexican Carlos Santana. So when traveling to Mexico, don’t forget to learn a few steps and dance to beautiful Mexican fusion.

There’s nothing like listening to a local band play their local music. You can go to these countries and get the subliminal musical experience! With just one click, you can get free flights!

Extreme Traveling: Be an Expat!

July 31, 2008 - 3:59 am No Comments

Have you ever visited a place that is so great you literally never wanted to leave? Well, there are people who actually do these. These are expats or expatriates.

Most people become expats not really for the sake of traveling and delving into foreign culture, but for economic reasons. America for example receives plenty of expats because it is easy to get a decent job that can easily cover the living expenses. So for people living in countries where the minimum wage can barely reach the cost of living, being an expat is always an option. Singapore, U.A.E. and the U.S. top the list of the best places to be expats. People who do not really earn big in underdeveloped countries can live luxuriously as expats in countries that pay huge sums of money.

If you decide on being an expat, it is important that you choose the country carefully. There are plenty of countries that pay you big bucks, but to hit two birds with one stone, why not choose a country that is not only financially rich, but also rich in culture and natural beauty? Here are a few great places to be an expat in.

1.    Mexico. Ok, Mexico is not your ideal expatriate destination if you want to earn big bucks. But the cost of living, particularly real estates, is much cheaper. Money matters aside, Mexico is a great expat destination because it is paradise. The great beaches, vibrant culture, welcoming locals and interesting history make this a great place for foreigners to live in. Just imagine yourself waking up in paradise everyday! Simply click here and you can fly to Mexico for free!

2.    San Francisco. The cost of living in San Francisco is high, but that’s ok because the salaries are high as well. More importantly, art is alive in this city. San Francisco is a great place for artists to be expats in. Graffiti is supported by the government and is highly encouraged. Just look around and you’ll see that this city has walls for canvases. I would definitely want to live there.

3.    Tokyo. Japan ranks the 2nd most expensive city in the world making it a great place to get high salaries. But more than the possibilities for luxurious living, Tokyo is great because it has an interesting culture and unique customs.

4.    Hong Kong. For someone who loves to shop, Hong Kong is your expat destination. Aside from giving out big salaries, Hong Kong has an interesting and colorful pop culture that you will surely enjoy living in. The entire place is like a huge shopping mall with a wide and complete variety of commodities. And the best thing is cheap stuff is not hard to come by.

5.    India. Aside from getting big salaries, India is a great place to live in because of the culture. It’s difficult to be bored in this place with its many attractions. But this place is not for everyone. You have to deal with traffic and some densely populated streets. India is not really for those who want to live like Dons. This interesting country is more for culture and history buffs and for travelers who are ready for any kind of adventure.

You’ll never really know a place unless you’ve lived there long enough. So choose a city that you think suits your interests. Don’t just go there for the big bucks, or you might end up being bored in a desk job in the end. Consider the city’s culture. It is important that you get not only financial wealth but also cultural and personal growth as an expat.

Meeting Marine Wildlife: Swim with Sharks!

July 21, 2008 - 10:38 pm No Comments

Marine life holds an interesting collection, and people are finding more and more ways to get a close encounter with it. But some people are not satisfied with watching fish from a giant walk-in aquarium. They want to get wet themselves and swim with the magnificent creatures of the sea. There are various diving spots, depending on the risk you’re willing to take.

1.    Dolphin Encounters. Dolphins have to be the safest out of all the big aquatic animals. Being a harmless creature, there are many marine parks in the world that allow close encounters with dolphins. There’s the famous Sea World in San Diego, Dolphin Cove in Florida, Dolphin Discovery in Mexico, Dolphin Quest in Bermuda in Hawaii and many more. Think of a tropical country and they’ll probably have dolphin diving spots. Though safe, dolphin encounters require some training and educational session first. Fly to Mexico for free and start your adventures!

2.    Turtle Snorkeling. If you’re not up for dolphins, maybe turtles are a better choice. Hawaii is one of the places that offer great encounters with these cute green water critters. Like dolphins, these giants are harmless, making a safe and interesting encounter for tourists. Fly free to Hawaii and enjoy marine wildlife!

3.    Swimming with Whale Sharks. The world’s biggest fish and biggest shark can be found in Philippine waters and can be easily viewed from December to May. Don’t fret about swimming with these creatures because its name is a big misnomer. It is actually not a whale, and though it’s a shark, it’s another gentle giant. Its size can be intimidating but it won’t bite!

4.    Shark Expeditions. This time, I’m talking about real life-threatening sharks. Aquatica Charters in Los Angeles Harbor offers various ways to have a shark encounter. There are the caged dives where you can be in the same waters as the sharks, but you’ll be viewing them from a steel cage. Day and night, swimmer or sinker, you can take this aquatic tour. But if the thrill from a caged dive is not enough for you, you can get the Extreme Shark Expeditions where in you get to swim without the cage! There will be nothing between you and a fatal shark but water. This type of tour is obviously risky and thus requires expertise in diving and education about sharks. Whether it’s a caged or open water dive, LA will cater to your marine tour wants. Click here to fly free to Los Angeles! South Africa and the Carribean also offer these thrilling dives. Fly free to Bahamas and get a view of tiger sharks, hammerheads, lemonsharks and more!

Encounters with the marine wildlife can be intimidating and subliminal life experiences. It offers a different world of color and life. Just take note of whatever the tour guide says because these creatures deserve respect. Though some of these are harmless, there are some that enjoy solitude and do not want to be incessantly poked.
