How Do You Say ‘I Love You’ in Paris?

September 25, 2008 - 1:41 am No Comments

The city of lights, the city of love, the city of pleasure and amusement, the epicenter of taste and culture, call it what you want and you will still run out of things to say about how wonderful Paris is.  Situated on the river Seine in the north of France, Paris is one of the most well known places in world.

Most people believe that love is a once in a lifetime occurrence, obviously these people haven’t been to Paris.  The city provides more than just attractions or places of interest.  When you step onto the city streets, you will surely be blanketed by a distinct ambiance of romance not found anywhere else.

Sometimes, just sitting idly in one of the hundreds of cafes is enough to be overwhelmed by the city’s grandeur.  But, if by any chance you manage to shake off the feeling of paralyzing amazement, then you can start visiting the cities most important places, those which makes Paris what it is and what it has been.

Making your way to these historic venues should be considered as sights and activities in itself.  You’ll be treated to an inspiring journey the minute you exit your hotel room.  Paris offers more than 750 hotels ranging from the affordable (Hôtel le Parisien Saint-Lazare) to the ritzy (Maurice Belle Etoile Suite).

While walking is considered to be the most scenic way to see Paris there are rail systems, called the Metro, and cabs to help you rest your feet while on your way to more far off places.

Museums are a dime a dozen in Paris, but the crème de la crème is surely the Musee du Louvre.  Here you can take guided tours, or be brave enough to venture around its seemingly endless halls by yourself, and see firsthand the most seminal pieces of art (by the thousands) ever produced by Western culture.

Of course, there’s also one of the Seven Wonders of the World, a little thing called the Eiffel Tower.  Engineered by Gustave Eiffel, it is the tallest building in all of Paris.  200,000,000 people have visited it since 1889, and you owe to yourself to be number 200,000,001.  Seeing Paris from its peak should be on anyone’s bucket list.

No trip to a foreign country would be complete without tasting the local delicacy.  Fortunately, French cuisine just happens to provide some of the best dishes.  Tickle your palette while eating at the many local restaurants scattered throughout the city.  If ever you get full to the brim with escargot and baguettes, you can also try restaurants specializing in African, American, Belgian, British & Irish, Central European, Chinese, East European, French, German & Austrian, Greek, Indian, Indonesian, Italian, and Japanese to name few.

There are many more things to do and see in Paris such as Notre Dame, Centre Pompidou, Cite de Sciences at de l’Industrie, and the Arc de Triomphe.  But whatever these are, no description would ever give them justice, for they should be experienced.

Where to Find Fine Wine

August 5, 2008 - 1:48 am No Comments

Good wine only comes from good grapes, and good grapes can only be grown in certain parts of the world. This is why few countries have made names for themselves by producing good wine. Champagne is actually a region in France where sparkling white wine was concocted. The French, alongside many other Europeans make good wine. America and Australia also have great wineries that turn grapes into the best drink you can have with your meal.

California. If you’re visiting San Francisco, you cannot miss crossing the Golden Gate Bridge and have a wine tour in Napa Valley. The climate and geography in Napa County are perfect for growing grapes. Near Napa is another county that is recognized for great wine. Sonoma County has similar environment as Napa which also makes it a great place to grow grapes. California produces both red and white wine. They are particularly famous for their Cabernet and Chardonnay. Click here to fly to San Francisco for free and start your wine tasting now!

France. Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne are the top regions to get your wine. Bordeaux is more famous for their red wine, which they produce in wide varieties. You can get the strong and full taste of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes which is great with your meaty dinner. Burgundy grows Pinot Noir grapes which is softer than Cabernet. Chardonnay is also widely grown for fine white wine. Champagne, of course, is where you can get the top-of-the-line sparkling white wine.

Italy. A town in Italy is also internationally recognized for its production of sparkling white wine. Asti Spumante comes from Moscato Bianco grapes which are widely grown in Asti. In contrast with your red wine which is a perfect match to your steak, Asti Spumante is sweet and does not have high alcohol content, making it a great drink with dessert. Chianti in Tuscany, on the other hand, is keener in making red wine.

Spain. Red wine is more widely produced in Spain, but they have more white grape vineyards! This is because aside from fine red wine, Spain produces the best brandy. Simply click here to fly free to Spain! Taste not only great red wine but their prided brandy.

Choosing your wine is a lot like choosing an outfit. There are so many choices and mixing and matching is important. To totally satisfy your palate, think of which grapes you want. Will the sweet Asti Spumante suit you or are you in the mood for some strong Cabernet Sauvignon? Also, consider the meal you are having. Beef will have you craving for Cabernet, and poultry will surely match your Chardonnay. Lastly, bear in mind the place where it is produced! Click here and you can get 6 bottles of wine for free!

Strange Scenic Spots You Need To Visit

July 18, 2008 - 3:25 am No Comments

Most of the time, average travelers look over the best places to visit, especially if they rely on the tourist maps sold at airport gift shops. Those maps are usually out of date, presenting only the popular and common sights to see. It is extremely exciting to penetrate inside a culture’s wacky vibe, know its alternative views on pop culture and get infused through an out-of-this-world traveling experience. If you’re looking for alternative scenic fixes, here’s a special treat for your wandering eyes and footsies:

1. Octopied Building, France.  After you visit the Eiffel Tower and The Louvre, you might want to take a peek at this visually entertaining structure that lies in the heart of France. Made by artist FilthyLuker, he says that in his mind,  Cthulhu lies inside the building, dreaming. If you love reading the H.P. Lovecraft’s tale about this mythos, then this site should definitely be included in your tourist list. Visit Paris for free!

2. The Spoonbridge and Cherry, Walker Center of Art, Minneapolis. Made by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, this gigantic spoon resting on a soft field of grass is the celebratory piece of the Center’s Sculpture Garden 20th anniversary. Not only is it massively attractive, the cherry adds the drama needed for countless photo ops you might want to take part of.

3. Dinner in the Sky, Toronto. There’s more to life than a super spicy chicken neck paired with cinnamon slushees, If you’re up for a wild dining set-up, Toronto’s 115 feet-high dinner table awaits you. Balancing your meal in the suspended glass room isn’t the only thrill, you’ll also get to see highly-skilled waiters serving champagne in acrobat-like flexibility. Remember to bring extra wipes or napkins once you visit the Dinner in the Sky, something tells me eating the tomato soup won’t be very tidy at all. If you want to have that unusually thrilling tour to Toronto for free, click here.

4. Kingman Reef, Pacific Atolls and Islands. Are you tired of the usual crayon fish-infested reefs that you see everyday in the Discovery Channel? Ecologist Enric Sala found this 500-year-old giant lobe coral in the Kingman Reef that has been said to harbor the size of Manhattan City. Not only is it a beauty to look at, it is also shaped like a flying saucer! He described it to be “a glittering city of staghorn, mushroom, pillar, and plate corals packed so tightly together there is hardly a patch of bare sand making it a true underwater Eden”. You might be surprised to find Spongebob, Flipper or Ariel somewhere in there, I heard they were all off to see this majestic reef to hunt for crabs and shrimp.

5. Fight Club, Union Square, New York. I know we’re not supposed to “talk about it”, but Chuck Palahniuk’s  novel Fight Club was sensationalized after the release of its movie adaptation starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, but little do others know that Fight Club is for real! The urban youth inspired by Fight Club’s theme is ongoing in (mostly) clandestine locations around town, but in Union Square, it’s free entertainment. Picture yourself watching a live UFC match, only with hipsters and all sorts of young people as the players. You might even see a emo guy show-off his teary dragon kick and suicide jabs too. New York may be an expensive city, but you can always fly there for free.
