Colored Shores: Different Colors of Sand

September 10, 2008 - 1:54 am 2 Comments

While driving a snazzy-looking Mazda from a car rental ireland service I stumbled upon a hidden paradise. It was a place they call Kerry (South West of Ireland methinks), the fine sand and rolling waves made me think of something - nothing feels more relaxing than feeling sand on your feet and between your toes. Believe it or not, sand does not only come in gold or white. You will be surprised at how different beaches paint the earth with varying colors of sand. Here are the best places to get different colors of sands:

1.    Golden Sand. This is probably the most common color. The Virgin Islands of the Caribbean have a lot of beautiful beaches. Travel to the Virgin Islands and you’ll find golden shores gleaming under the tropical heat!

2.    White Sand. People usually seek this color of sand. There are plenty of white sand beaches around the world. Caladesi beach in Clearwater Florida is deemed America’s Best Beach for 2008 not only because of the clear calm waters, but also because of the pure white sand!

3.    Pink Sand. The Caribbean Sea cradles not only idyllic white sand beaches but also pink sands. Go to Harbour Island in the Bahamas where you can rest on soft fine pink sands!

4.    Black Sand. Hawaii offers a lot white sand beaches, but what you probably don’t expect to see are black shores. Active volcanic activity in the Big Island of Hawaii created these black sands! You probably won’t find black grains of sand comforting, but it is still worth visiting. You don’t always get to see black shores.

5.    Green Sand. Hawaii offers even more colorful sands. Aside from black and white beaches, Puu Mahana of the Big Island has green sands due to olivine crystals. The shores are simply breathtaking.

So when you’re planning your next vacation, do not lock your desires to white sand beaches. White shores are idyllic but there are plenty of other colors to choose from! Ever imagined lying on pink sand? Cruise the Bahamas and you can put that imagination to reality!

The Caribbean Sea cradles thousands of islands and islets, that it is bound to have gorgeous beaches. Aside from the beaches and its interesting reputation for housing pirates, the islands have more unique sceneries, cultures and histories to offer an eager traveler. Get to know the different islands and choose which Caribbean paradise should be in your itinerary.

Bahamas. This is a favorite of the rich and the famous. With just a swing from their wallets, they buy a home, and for some an entire island, from the Bahamas. Who can blame them? The Bahamas must have one of the world’s best beaches. Picture your idyllic shore and Bahamas will give it to you. Fine white sand, crystal clear water, refreshing sea breeze and the enthralling sunsets will leave you in a daze. If you feel like lying down on the sand in tranquility, you must visit the Pink Sands Resort. This is not a misnomer; the sand is actually pink! With a few quiet villas, away from the commotion of the city, a trip to Pink Sands will surely be out of this world.

But Bahamas is not all about a quiet vacation. It is a big place and other parts of it are the favored site of party-seeking Spring Breakers! Nassau, Bahamas is one of the top Spring Break destinations. So for some thrilling water sports, exciting encounters with sea creatures, wild nightlife and vibrant art scene, Nassau is the place to be.

Virgin Islands. Virgin Islands have become a tourist haven. It has everything to cater to the interests of the whole family. St. Thomas Island will bring you closer to nature with bike and boat trips. Both the terrain and its surrounding waters provide scenic pleasures. And after all these nature trips, you can head to a bar or a theater. Casinos and hotels will give you the luxury you deserve on your vacation. St. Thomas Island is a destination both of nature lovers and city goers.

Cuba. Cuba also has great beaches. But the way to make the most out of your trip to Cuba is delving into the place’s history and culture. Go to Castillo de Farnes where Che and Castro had a toast after the revolution. Smokers can head to any of Cuba’s tobacco factories and learn a little about the island’s prided industries. Playa Giron is also a must-see. This museum will take you to Cuba’s difficult and even violent times. The greatest “attraction” would have to be the locals. These people have interesting histories and cultures. Don’t hesitate to meet them and let them be the ones to show you Cuba’s greatest features. I’m sure you won’t be able to resist dancing to the beats of their groovy music.

Jamaica

Jamaica. Being home to the iconic peace lover and father of reggae, Jamaica will surely give you the most soothing and interesting tour. You get to visit the village where Bob Marley grew up. You will also get to stand on Mt. Zion, where the reggae master used to meditate. Being surrounded by the same environment that inspired the birth of reggae, you will surely catch the calming good vibes of the island. The waterfalls and beaches will also not fail to complete your getaway.

There are so many possibilities with travel, so to help you narrow your choices down, here are a few places that might interest you based on your zodiac sign.

Aries (21 March-20 April)
These people are daring and sociable at the same time. A great party in Phi Phi Islands of Thailand is perfect for Aries. Backpackers from different corners of the world go to these islands for an annual party. Phi Phi Islands can give both an adventure and great social encounters that might be what an Aries seeks.

Gemini (22 May-22 June)

Leo (24 July-23 August)
These are the lovers and the charismatic. The French are free spirited and do not shy away when they want to physically express their desires in public. Paris has the romantic ambience that a Leo would definitely find comforting. But wherever you are, a good hotel is important for a romantic stay. Virgo (24 August-23 September)
These are thinkers more than hikers. In contrast with the partying Aries, a Virgo can enjoy a serene view of the Pink Sands Beach in Bahamas. Lying in the soft sand, the mind of a Virgo can wander far uninterrupted. No loud music and people chattering; just the sounds of the waves and wind will soothe the ears.

Libra (24 September-23 October)
Librans are open-minded. They do not see things in black and white, making cultural immersions very interesting and worthwhile for them. Travels to ethnic tribes are possibly what interests Librans the most.

Scorpio (24 October-22 November)
These are resourceful independent people, important qualities in backpacking. Traveling in Australia can be an exciting experience for travelers with this sign. Australian weather and terrain can be harsh on tourists, but this kind of challenge suits a Scorpio.

Sagittarius (23 November-22 December)
With a free-spirit, a Sagittarius may enjoy island hopping in the Philippine Islands. The country has thousands of islands that can accommodate a Sagittarius whose soul and passion cannot be contained.

Capricorn (23 December-19 January)
Control is important for these people of strong personalities. An African Safari would be perfect for them. They are unlikely to be stunned in fear by the wild. They can keep their composure, which is a crucial safety precaution in the wild.

Aquarius (20 January-19 February)
These are often compassionate people, making a trip to poverty-stricken places life-changing. For them, a travel does not have to be leisurely hedonistic. Traveling can be for a cause. This is a quality they share with Librans.

Pisces (20 February-20 March)
Pisces are dreamers, and having the fish as their symbol, an obvious option would be a dreamy encounter with marine life. The view from a dive in the Great Barrier Reef can be out of this world, which is what a Piscean wants with his/her travels.
