Finding Your City in Florida

September 17, 2008 - 11:02 pm No Comments

If your idea of a great vacation includes beautiful beaches complemented by an interesting culture, you can never go wrong with Florida. Each city blends a unique metropolitan atmosphere with its pristine shores. Here are some of the great cities you can choose to visit in Florida, depending on your taste and interests.

Miami has to be one of the most popular cities in Florida. As you have probably seen in TV and film, Miami has that sexy vibe in it. If you’re the type who wants to spend the whole night drinking and dancing, then party away in Miami. The neighboring Miami Beach city, which as the name implies is the area with stretches of beaches, is also famous for having topless sunbathers and hot skateboarders. This is also known for being the favorite spot of celebrities, so if you’re lucky, you just might spot a hot Hollywood star or the surfboard riding the waves!

There’s also the popular Daytona Beach city. This one draws plenty of tourists not only because of the shores, but also because of its unique love for the motorsports culture. Obviously, this is home to Daytona International Speedway which holds the popular Daytona 500 and plenty of other international racing events. So if you’re the lover of speed, there’s no other place to spend your vacation in than in the “birthplace of speed.”

Orlando, on the other hand, is the haven for both beach lovers and theme park goers. Orlando cradles the world’s biggest Disney theme park, Disneyworld Orlando. This is more than a park; Disneyworld is a resort complex where families and friends can enjoy four theme parks, two water parks and 23 hotels! If you’ve made the most out of Disneyworld, which I doubt you can, you might want to explore Universal Orlando which is also a resort complex that brings movies to life! Two theme parks, Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, turn imagination into reality.

St. Augustine prides itself not only with beautiful beaches but also with its rich history. Make sure to have a camera ready because being the nation’s oldest city, St. Augustine will astound you with gorgeous architecture reflective of its colonial past. After lying on the beach, take some time to explore the corners of this marvelous city. Make sure to visit the museums and historical sites. Like any other old city, St. Augustine is full of ghost stories. So if you’re the type who wishes to spend the vacation exploring the paranormal, have a ghost tour at St. Augustine!

Fort Lauderdale does not fall behind in being an interesting draw for travelers. This is considered to be the Venice of America due to its intricate canal system. But instead of riding a gondola, you can ride a water taxi when visiting this city. Fort Lauderdale also has a thriving art scene that particularly boasts local skill in crafting glass.

But if you’re really after the beaches, head to St. Petersburg or Clearwater where the blissfully virgin Caladesi beach is accessible. This earned the title America’s Best Beach for 2008. The sands are pure white and the waters are definitely clear. Clear your head of the hassles of urban life and relax on this island uninterrupted by the bustling noise of city streets. There are no commercial establishments that will come between you and Mother Nature.

Florida truly offers diversity. It has so much to offer any kind of tourist. Simply take young pick among these cities in Florida! And if you’re lucky to have the time, why not travel to each city! If money is your only problem, there are plenty of ways to lighten your budget.

A Look at Alcatraz: The World’s Most Controversial Rock

August 11, 2008 - 11:53 pm 1 Comment

The most intriguing attraction that San Francisco offers is a tour around the famous Alcatraz rock on which a prison house used to function. This is such an interesting site that it attracts attention not only from tourists but from media as well. I’m sure you remember Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage get some action in their movie The Rock, which was based and partly set on Alcatraz.

One reason why this is such a famous attraction is that it housed the criminal icon Al Capone. In the 1920’s, as the boss of the Chicago Outfit, he fronted as a furniture dealer when the public knows that the Chicago Outfit is a criminal organization that engages in illegal activity including the smuggling of liquor to say the least. Al Capone was caught, but what made him a legend is that he was convicted only for tax evasion and not for any of the numerous crimes that was publicly known. Visit Alcatraz and see more famous inmates Al Capone had.

The rock is famous also because of its controversial nature. Aside from cruel treatment of prisoners, the jail house was shut down because of the inhumane condition of isolation that both prisoners and wardens had to endure. Not only policemen but also plenty of staff members such as cooks and priests had to live on the rock which was separated from the city coastline by miles of cold sea water. This means that workers were no less prisoners than the convicts. Everyone on the rock was separated from their families and the everyday opportunities of the progressive city.

Another intrigue surrounding the Alcatraz is the escape. There were many attempts but only a pair made it pass the walls and were not brought back in. They did it by making a hole through their cell walls with utensils, mainly spoons. No one knows if they actually made it pass the sea. The water is ice cold. They could have swam and freed themselves or they could have died battling the waves and temperature of the sea. Survived or not, they were the only ones who actually escaped the rock. This story was even made into a movie starring Clint Eastwood, Escape from Alcatraz.

It is a sin not to take the Alcatraz tour when in San Francisco. It is surprisingly more touching than educational. You’ll be taken around the cells and function rooms. You can even enter an isolation cell just so you can get a feel of what it’s like to be a prisoner in extreme isolation. You will also be surprised at how talented and educated the prisoners were. With nothing to do, they painted and read most of the time. Most importantly, you’ll get a view of the vibrant city from the jailhouse’s small windows, which will surely make you feel a deep and sublime compassion for anyone who had to stay there.

Alcatraz is one of the most interesting sites around the world. Take a chance to fly to San Francisco and tour this amazing rock. You do not have to spend as much!

Visit the Past: Marvel at the World’s Great Ruins

August 10, 2008 - 11:48 pm No Comments

Some structures have retained their grandeur even at the state of near destruction. No house, village, palace or theater looked this majestic even with its shattered walls and torn roofs. These ruins serve as symbols of ancient civilizations’ greatness, and are definitely worth visiting.

Parthenon in Greece must be the most admired ancient structure around the world. This temple for the Greek goddess Athena was built in 5th century BC. Today, even at its ruin, you can still see the superiority and beauty of Ancient Greek architecture. Click here and get an American Airline gift card to have a cheaper flight to Greece!

If the Greeks pride themselves with the Parthenon, the Roman’s have the Colosseum as their greatest architectural construction. This amphitheatre used to house Rome’s violent spectacles such as gladiator fights and executions for the enjoyment of 50,000 viewers. It later had many other uses, but now, it remains a symbol of a great ancient civilization.

As featured in the movie Tomb Raider, Cambodia also has its share of great ruins. The Angkor Wat built in the 12th century and is naturally facing some challenges of deterioration. But despite the threat of inevitable erosion through time, this temple can hardly be called a ruin. There are few ruined towers but as a whole, Angkor Wat is well conserved, maintained and taken care of.

In New Mexico, plenty of Pueblos which were home to various ancient communities are being preserved and are open for public tours. History buffs and art lovers will marvel at the adobe structures characteristic of ancient architecture. The Aztec Ruins National Monument is a must-see for anyone traveling to New Mexico.

Andalusia in Spain has a distinct Moorish influence in their architecture. The Alcazaba in Malaga is one perfect example of this influence. Like most ruins, this alcazaba dates centuries back Spanish history. Upon entering the Alcazaba of Malaga, one will see another magnificent structure, a Roman Theater. Fly to Malaga now and witness this grandeur!

The Inca tribe proved to be great artists. They produced beautifully intricate textiles, but their fine architecture of Machu Picchu in Peru proved their excellence in architecture. Not only are the ruins aesthetically marvelous, the materials used and engineering are also praiseworthy. The Incas were one of the world’s best practitioners of the ashlar technique, where mortar is not used to keep stones together. The materials for their buildings were cut perfectly to fit each other so it would stand strong even without mortar.

Great ruins become symbols and sources of national pride. When visiting any of these places, it is a sin not to get a close look at these majestic ruins.

Traveling on a tight budget? Not to worry. You can still visit these amazing sites.
