Crazy Scary: The World’s Wildest Roller Coasters!

July 24, 2008 - 10:59 pm 1 Comment

Nothing can give you the most thrilling minute of your life than a crazy roller coaster ride. Some people think it’s ridiculous to fall in line for hours for a ride that will only last two minutes maximum. But when you get off that roller coaster, I’m sure you’ll be falling in line again. Good thing geniuses keep on coming up with new and unique ideas for roller coasters. Engineers just keep on aiming for taller drops and more twisted loops. Here are a few of the world’s craziest roller coasters that are bound to make you feel fear and fun both at the same time.

Top Thrill Dragster, Cedar Point Ohio. This one has no crazy loops. It’s actually a plain go up then down ride. But don’t get me wrong. This may be a short ride but it will surely give you a scare. The train runs in a dashing 120 mph on steel rails that stand 420 feet tall, with a drop that twists down at a 90-degree angle of descent! It was the steepest, tallest and fastest roller coaster at the time it opened. Fly to Ohio to get the thrill of this Dragster! Simply click here and you can get a $500 Airline gift card!

Kingda ka, Six Flags Great Adventure New Jersey. This ride has a very similar design to the Top Thrill Dragster, only it is today’s fastest and tallest roller coaster! It is 456 feet tall and the trains run at 128 mph! You will be thrown 45 stories high up and then back down in less than a minute. Feel your insides scramble in this daring ride! Get a $500 Airline Gift Card to make your trip to New Jersey cheaper!

Momonga Standing & Loop Coaster, Yomiuriland, Tokyo. Yes, we pay homage to the ingenious creativity of the Japanese! This ride may be old, but it is the first to innovate the seating of roller coasters. In 1982, Yomiuriland opened the world to the first stand-up coaster. As the name implies, the people stand up on the trains throughout the ride! Today, there are many operating stand-up rides around the world.

Tatsu, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Los Angeles. Steepness of the rails and speed of the trains are not enough to scare riders. The way you are seated also adds to the thrill, thus, people innovated roller coaster seats. Tatsu is a flying roller coaster. This means that the back of their seats lay flat on the rails overhead. The riders face down assuming a flying position. Because this is not a usual sitting coaster, you’ll get a totally different view. See yourself hanging hundreds of feet above the ground! Fly free to Los Angeles and ride this crazy train yourself!

The Skycycle, Washuzan Highland Park, Okayama. Ok, now the Japanese had their imagination going once again. It is not the fastest, it is not the steepest. But I assure you that this is the scariest and wildest ride you will be on! This is because there are no trains. You will be pedaling your way through the rails on a bicycle! Crazy scary!

Interesting Road Side Attractions

July 24, 2008 - 12:07 am No Comments

Road side attractions/distractions should need no introduction.  Ever since America has had a love affair with the open road, these often strange and larger than life sites have been an odd yet endearing part of experiencing the country.  Most people just pass by them while driving through interstates, while simply dismissing road signs suggesting attractions like, “See The World’s Longest Growing Toe Nail at the NextExit” with a chuckle or even a sneer.  Nevertheless, they have been around for so long that a lot of people fail to consider how the highways would be quite a boring stretch without them.

While some may not be worth a simple photo opportunity, there are those rare gems scattered throughout the country that you would wish you’d taken the time to sneak a peek or even marvel at, or even worth flying to then taking a car.

Carhenge:  Alliance, NE
If you don’t have enough money to fly to England to see those enigmatic piles of boulders, then it’s best to just drive to New England instead.  Sure these old cars haven’t been around for thousands of years, and their purpose is pretty much clear-cut towards luring in motorists, but at least it holds a resemblance to the real thing in one way or another.

Paper House: Pigeon Cove, MA
Back in 1922 a Swedish immigrant named Ellis Stenman decided that wood, or any common material wasn’t quite up to his standards when it came to building a house.  Instead he looked to old newspapers, and thus became one of the unknowing founders of recycling.  The house is a two room cottage and is made entirely of newspapers (100,000 to be exact), and so are all the furniture inside.  Stenman even used his own homemade glue, made from water and apple peels, to piece together this masterpiece.

Lucy the Elephant: Margate City, NJ
James Lafferty was so good at zoomorphic architecture that the U.S. government gave him a patent which granted him exclusive rights to make buildings with animal shapes for seventeen years.  The behemoth he is mostly known for is a six story elephant named Lucy.  Made from almost a million pieces of wood, she is 60 feet long and 18 feet wide, making her the largest elephant in the world and a National Historic Landmark.

Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast:  Fall River, MA
For those brave souls looking for a bit of the macabre, a rather homely house with a troubled past should be worth looking into.  The year was 1892, and during a doomed August evening a couple by the name of Andrew and Abby Borden would never have suspected their own daughter Lizzie to cleave their skulls with a hatchet and leave them dead for the neighbors to find.  As the story goes, 32 year old Lizzie was later tried but acquitted, leaving her to haunt Fall River, maybe even in the afterlife.

Christ of the Ozarks: Eureka Springs, AK
Looking for a good spot to take your Bible study group for a field trip?  If you happen to pass by Arkansas, then you guys should definitely pay homage to the one of the biggest representations of the Lord and Savior, maybe even say a little prayer or two.  There’s nothing more serene than seeing a towering statue of the son of the Almighty spreading his arms and giving the world a big hug.

5 More Weird Reasons Why You Should Definitely Go To Japan

July 23, 2008 - 11:17 pm 1 Comment

Japan is the epicenter of innovation. Aside from trying hundreds of different types of sushi and buying a truckload of Hello Kitty merchandise, there are a lot more reasons why you shouldn’t die without even visiting the land of the rising sun. Home to the wackiest, most off-beat and exciting things, activities, toys and food on earth, Japan continues to be Earth’s funhouse headquarters. We came across some interesting things and places that might entice you to board on a plane to Japan:

Tsukiji Market, Tokyo

If New York has the stock market for cutthroat brokers and executives, Japan has the world-famous Tsukiji Market, where hundreds of restaurateurs, cooks, kitchen wholesalers and everyone who has an appetite for fresh seafood run and scream around like deranged brokers in hopes of getting the freshest, heaviest and most valuable seafood in Japan. Though seeing the crazed crowd fight over tentacles and fish tails might be a thrill, the prices are not that cheap. The best fish are laid in front of the people, and you might be surprised how much a sashimi enthusiast is willing to cash out for a nice slab of raw seafood. They call it the “tuna auctions” and each day, the bidding starts at 5am sharp and the highest bidders get to take home the catch of the day. In 2008, the best tuna fish was sold for six million yen, about $60,000.

The Sub Marine Catcher, Osaka

Cute and cuddly stuffed animals don’t quite cut it for Japanese kids anymore, so those super genius Japanese folks created a claw game that’s too weird to be true. This $14,950 machine presents an out-of-this world claw game, where for $2, anyone gets a chance to have his/her very own lobster or giant prawns. Yes, angry sea creatures that might snip your fingers the moment you get it from the drop box. In Osaka’s futuristic and trendy district of Namba, the game is already in most arcade halls. The makers of this game assures the claws are gentle and soft-moving, so patrons got nothing to worry about crushing the shrimp to death. A restaurant owner in the same district even offers cooking service for guests who played the game and won prizes.

Crazy Pizza

Japan has the most outrageous, unlikely pizzas that make the Italians go and fetch for ideas. Pizza Hut Japan is famous for their Whole Shrimp Cheese Bite Pizza, where a ring of shrimp swaddled in creamy cheese makes its stuffed crust a taste to discover. Another one is the Shrimp and Mayo Roll Crust Pizza, its stuffed crust holds mayonnaise-injected fat shrimps for a scrumptious bite of heart attack.

Unbelivable and Scary Ice Cream Flavors

You might want to hold dessert for a couple more hours, because you might be surprised to see Japan’s buffet of wild ice cream flavors. Fancy some Eel ice cream? What about some Squid and Ox Tongue ice cream? The cute cartoon logos on its containers hold no promise of a tasty dessert, but if you’re up for a challenge, I suggest you make your own Japanese banana  split with these uncommon flavors and you might just be surprised. I have a feeling the Cactus and Charcoal Ice Cream aren’t so refreshing, I wouldn’t want every bite to feel like push pins poking my mouth or a trip down the mines. If your little kids are annoying you for some ice cream after a trip to Disneyland, take them to an ice cream store and see if they still want some.

Meguro’s Parasite Museum, Tokyo

Known as the “only” parasite museum in the world, its centerpiece is a 8.8 meter tapeworm. Selected from a collection of thousands, three hundred or so specimens fill the two stories of Meguro`s Parasite Museum - in Tokyo, next to the Otori-Jinga shrine. The second story includes an interactive world map: press a button for a specific disease, and it will light up wherever the disease is present. The museum was founded in 1953 from the private funds of general practitioner, Satoru Kamegai - and with parasites from his private collection. Born in 1909, the doctor was still finding parsites up until his death in 2002. He found, and exhibited, some rare parasites he found in the body of a coelacanth - when he was 92. The museum is free - and they’ve had some financial trouble - but they do have a gift shop. T-shirts are available, as well as some keyrings with tiny, encased parasites.

Meeting Marine Wildlife: Swim with Sharks!

July 21, 2008 - 10:38 pm No Comments

Marine life holds an interesting collection, and people are finding more and more ways to get a close encounter with it. But some people are not satisfied with watching fish from a giant walk-in aquarium. They want to get wet themselves and swim with the magnificent creatures of the sea. There are various diving spots, depending on the risk you’re willing to take.

1.    Dolphin Encounters. Dolphins have to be the safest out of all the big aquatic animals. Being a harmless creature, there are many marine parks in the world that allow close encounters with dolphins. There’s the famous Sea World in San Diego, Dolphin Cove in Florida, Dolphin Discovery in Mexico, Dolphin Quest in Bermuda in Hawaii and many more. Think of a tropical country and they’ll probably have dolphin diving spots. Though safe, dolphin encounters require some training and educational session first. Fly to Mexico for free and start your adventures!

2.    Turtle Snorkeling. If you’re not up for dolphins, maybe turtles are a better choice. Hawaii is one of the places that offer great encounters with these cute green water critters. Like dolphins, these giants are harmless, making a safe and interesting encounter for tourists. Fly free to Hawaii and enjoy marine wildlife!

3.    Swimming with Whale Sharks. The world’s biggest fish and biggest shark can be found in Philippine waters and can be easily viewed from December to May. Don’t fret about swimming with these creatures because its name is a big misnomer. It is actually not a whale, and though it’s a shark, it’s another gentle giant. Its size can be intimidating but it won’t bite!

4.    Shark Expeditions. This time, I’m talking about real life-threatening sharks. Aquatica Charters in Los Angeles Harbor offers various ways to have a shark encounter. There are the caged dives where you can be in the same waters as the sharks, but you’ll be viewing them from a steel cage. Day and night, swimmer or sinker, you can take this aquatic tour. But if the thrill from a caged dive is not enough for you, you can get the Extreme Shark Expeditions where in you get to swim without the cage! There will be nothing between you and a fatal shark but water. This type of tour is obviously risky and thus requires expertise in diving and education about sharks. Whether it’s a caged or open water dive, LA will cater to your marine tour wants. Click here to fly free to Los Angeles! South Africa and the Carribean also offer these thrilling dives. Fly free to Bahamas and get a view of tiger sharks, hammerheads, lemonsharks and more!

Encounters with the marine wildlife can be intimidating and subliminal life experiences. It offers a different world of color and life. Just take note of whatever the tour guide says because these creatures deserve respect. Though some of these are harmless, there are some that enjoy solitude and do not want to be incessantly poked.
